Daggett County approves one-year extension of indigent defense contract with Uinta/UNO County at $6,550

Daggett County commissioners voted Nov. 19 to approve amendment No. 1 to contract UC22030, extending the county’s indigent defense services agreement with Uinta County/UNO County for one year at an annual payment of $6,550.
Lance Dean, managing public defender for Uinta County, said the MOU amount remains $6,550 and asked the commission to execute the corrected amendment. "The MOU between Daggett County and Uinta County ... is $6,550 per year," Dean said, explaining the county’s caseload has hovered around 20 cases per year and that Uinta County provides regionalized defense services across multiple attorneys.
Commissioners discussed the amendment form’s layout — which lists current and amendment amounts and can appear to double-bill — and asked staff to annotate the contract to show the 2024 amount was already paid so the 2025 amended amount would not be interpreted as an additional charge. With that clarifying note added, the board made and seconded a motion to approve the amendment; the motion passed on a voice vote.
Dean said the regional arrangement strengthens the defense system and noted the indigent defense commission, a grant provider, covers roughly 40% of the program’s budget. He requested that the county revisit funding levels next fall if the board wants to discuss a possible increase for 2026.
Next steps: staff will add the requested payment notation to the amendment paperwork and proceed with executing amendment No. 1 for the 2025 contract year.
