Commission backs Clay Basin paving as top road priority

"The road department would recommend to the commission, the 2 and a half miles of hot mix on the Clay Basin would be their recommendation for our priority," said Speaker 1, who presented the department—9s request. Speaker 1 noted the estimate for that work was "600 and something thousand."
Commissioners and staff discussed alternatives, including doing the corridor as a single, flat project and whether available bike-path funds could stretch to cover the state-line-east section to Airport Road. Speaker 1 also said the plan to accommodate bike traffic in constrained areas was to pave the road and use signage for a shared-road configuration rather than build separate 10-foot paved bike paths where right-of-way and wetlands limit space.
Speakers emphasized timing with contractor plants on site. "While Verdict is there, while they've got their plant set up, it would give a lot of bang for our buck," Speaker 1 said, urging the commission to endorse the request so the district could rank it first when distributing available funds. Several commissioners noted the window for using plant resources could be closing and that doing the work then would be less costly than a full federal-style engineered project.
Speaker 2 moved to approve the list as provided and Speaker 1 seconded; a voice vote recorded majority agreement. The commission discussed drainage and culvert sizes on affected routes before moving on to the next agenda item.
The commission did not set a final construction timetable during this meeting; staff will follow up on contractor availability, confirm any in-kind material credits (such as a previously referenced roto mill), and coordinate with district funding schedules.
