Davis County certifies Nov. election after canvass finds no discrepancies

Davis County officials certified the results of the Nov. 2024 election on Nov. 19 after the county's Board of Canvass completed required pre- and post-election audits and a hand recount, a county election official told the commission.
Brian McKinsey, who presented the Board of Canvass materials to commissioners, said the required pre-election test and audit covered 7,664 ballots and that the post-election audit included a hand count of 1,010 ballots. "There were no discrepancies in the audit," McKinsey said, noting the hand tabulation matched the electronic counts.
McKinsey also summarized ballots that were not counted, saying most vote-by-mail ballots were rejected because signatures did not match county records and most rejected provisional ballots lacked required identification. "In accordance with state statute, each of these voters were contacted through multiple methods," he said, describing steps to allow voters to rectify signature or ID issues.
The county reported 172,869 total ballots cast, representing 85.19% of active registered voters in Davis County. McKinsey read contest-level totals for statewide and local races and noted several local propositions and school board races. He also reported a lingering technical issue: county vote-history records from in-person electronic poll pads were not fully transferring into the state voter-registration system and county staff were "working with the state" to resolve that matter.
The commission voted unanimously to approve the canvass and certify the results for offices and contests contained entirely within Davis County.
The commission's vote concludes the county's canvass procedure; county staff said they expected the remaining state data-transfer issue to be resolved the same day.
