Supervisors approve multiple FY24/FY25 grant appropriations, reappropriations and disbursements

The board approved $7.54 million in disbursements, accepted several grant awards (including a $144,000 GoTek grant for the school division) and authorized FY24 year-end reappropriations and local reassignments totaling roughly $309,515.17 (local) and $379,845.14 (grant funds).
At the September meeting, Brunswick County’s finance director presented routine disbursements and a package of grant appropriations and year-end reappropriations that the board approved by voice vote.
The finance director requested approval of six check registers totaling $7,537,535.15 and outlined new grant awards that require appropriation to spend in FY25. Among the items approved was a GoTek grant to Brunswick County Public Schools for $144,000; the schools’ presenter said there were no matching funds associated with that award. The board moved and carried the appropriation for that grant.
The finance director also presented several other grant appropriations and reappropriations: a $400,000 award from the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation to support biocontrol work at Lake Gaston; $75,985 from the Virginia Department of Elections for equipment and software upgrades; roughly $50,000 for an EMS ambulance; and the opioid abatement settlement funds of approximately $20,309.52 to be reappropriated for abatement efforts. The board approved reappropriating unspent FY24 grant funds (totaling roughly $379,845.14) and local unspent funds ($309,515.17) to the FY25 budget to continue projects including Chestnut Road CDBG work, generator installation at four fire departments and other departmental needs.
Board members asked for a breakdown of the CSA (Child Services Act) caseload growth; the finance director agreed to provide year-by-year counts from 2020 onward as requested. The board approved the requested appropriations and reappropriations by motion and voice vote.
Separately, the board referred a $6,000 restoration request for the Brunswick Chamber of Commerce to the finance committee for review with the finance director and to return with a recommendation at the next meeting.
