County says $1M Business Site Ready grant will prepare site for prospective data center

Brunswick County reported a $1,000,000 Virginia Business Site Ready grant to prepare utilities for a site marketed for a potential data center; staff plan to bid to bore under Route 58 for utilities in February, with an April award and construction to follow, and continue due diligence with Thor Equity and utility-easement negotiations with DOC and Lawrenceville.
Brunswick County’s economic-development director told the Board of Supervisors the county has been awarded a $1,000,000 Virginia Business Site Ready (VBSR) grant, announced by Governor Youngkin, to ready a site the county hopes to market for a data center. Staff said the funds will be used to extend utilities and specifically to bore under Route 58 to bring water utilities to the Stonewall site.
The county’s consultant (Timmons Group) projects the county will go out for bid on the work in February, announce an award in April and begin construction thereafter with the scope expected to be completed by October. The county is collaborating with Thor Equity on a purchase and sale agreement and conducting due diligence related to the property’s use for a data center.
Officials also updated the board on work related to the former Brunswick County Correctional Center and said they have engaged with the state attorney general’s office and the Department of Corrections regarding purchase and utility easements. The economic-development director said utilities maps and easement negotiations are expected to be completed within about 30 days to proceed toward closing on the project.
Staff characterized the work as part of an active effort to ready the site for business attraction and said they will provide updates as due diligence proceeds.
