Campbell supervisors approve bridge dedication honoring Senior Airman Ricky L. Merritt

The Campbell County Board of Supervisors on Sept. 3 read a resolution recognizing Senior Airman Ricky L. Merritt and authorized staff to work with the Virginia Department of Transportation and the county’s legislative delegation to prepare a dedication sign under Virginia Code 33.2‑213.
Mister Rogers introduced the presentation and the Liberty University Air Force ROTC color guard presented the colors. Supervisor Lawton praised Merritt — a Lynch Station native and Alta Vista High School graduate — for his service and said the county is “very proud” to memorialize him. Family members including Carol Merritt and Joshua Merritt accepted a commemorative plaque and joined board members for photographs.
The resolution, read into the record, notes Senior Airman Merritt’s military service and that he died on Aug. 17, 1996. It directs staff to coordinate with VDOT and the local delegation to prepare the dedication, and it states the board’s commitment to cover costs for producing, placing and maintaining the sign.
Board members and attendees praised the effort. In her remarks, a family representative thanked the board and Brian Maddox for pursuing the recognition and asked residents to “cherish the ones you have” in remarks read at the ceremony.
Next steps: county staff will work with VDOT and legislative contacts to identify an exact location and produce the sign as authorized by the resolution.
