Augusta County details hurricane relief operations and approves community infrastructure grants

Augusta County staff and supervisors reviewed local hurricane relief efforts and approved several local infrastructure funding requests.

Miss Sprague and Miss Bragg described relief operations: county collection centers filled pallets that were sent by truck and volunteer flights coordinated with Blue Ridge Aviation and local partners. Donations came from businesses and churches; volunteers handled sorting, palletizing and transport. Staff asked residents to continue donating and volunteering because organizers expect needs to continue beyond the first week.

On board business, a supervisor moved to give Climbore Elementary PTO $50,000 for a new playground, split $25,000 each from North River and Middle River infrastructure accounts; the motion was seconded and passed 7–0. The board also approved a $75,000 infrastructure contribution from a supervisor—s account toward a county‑owned building project at Weirs Cave/New Hope Little League; a separate supervisor offered $15,000 from a recreation infrastructure account and the combined contributions were approved 7–0.

Separately, board members asked county staff whether flood‑control dams had ever been lowered in advance of storms to increase storage capacity; staff said they had not done so during the current official—s tenure (since 2010) and will consult the Headwaters authority about feasibility and procedure.

The board adjourned after the items were handled.
