Staff described layered security measures — including controlled-access vestibules and lockdown buttons that restrict access to specific wings — used at recently built schools to balance visibility with safety.
The district’s core team members toured multiple facilities with principals and users to see what worked and what should change. Staff noted flexibility in Tech-Ed and CTE spaces (single large shops vs. multiple specialized bays), and said the district is evaluating similar approaches for Sparta High School. Staff also said they are pursuing nearly $100,000 in matching grants through a consulting partner to offset construction costs where appropriate.
Board members asked about community engagement and the timeline for design decisions. Staff said focus groups continue at the high school this week and that additional family updates and community listening sessions will be scheduled as planning proceeds.
No formal action on the referendum was taken at the meeting; staff emphasized the planning phase and that designs and budgets will continue to be refined.
