Airport board’s hangar standards, hangar types and KAA membership win court approval

Gallatin County’s Fiscal Court approved the airport board’s recommendations to standardize hangar door sizes and to designate the types of hangars allowed at the county airport.
The airport board asked the court to adopt standard T‑hangar door sizes of 42 feet wide by 12 feet high as the baseline, while allowing 48x14 and 84x14 doors as alternative standard sizes. The board said any request for larger or nonstandard doors would be handled through a variance process requiring airport board approval.
The board also recommended that the airport allow three hangar types without special approval—T hangars, box hangars and corporate hangars—and require variances for atypical structures. Board members said the 10‑unit T‑hangar is funded through Department of Aviation and FAA entitlement funds and that ground‑lease terms and per‑square‑foot lease rates are being developed for future approvals.
The airport board recommended joining the Kentucky Aviation Association to help secure funding and advocacy at the state level; the court agreed to pay the approximately $200 annual membership from airport revenue.
Next steps: airport staff will return with draft ground‑lease terms, terminal building design decisions and additional standards on color, siting and terminal design for further review.
