McCreary County Fiscal Court honors youth football team, approves routine hires and purchases

McCreary County Judge Executive Jimmy B. Green read a proclamation Nov. 7 honoring the 2024 Pineapple Dragons 11U football team for an undefeated season and a Raider Bowl victory, citing head coach Andrew Sexton and Pine Knott Intermediate School for their roles in the season’s success. "Congratulations. You guys did a great job," Green said while presenting the proclamation and inviting players and parents to be photographed.
The court then moved through routine business. Members approved the Oct. 2024 minutes and carried multiple finance motions: a budget transfer requested by Treasurer Geraldine Laxton and an anticipated interfund transfer, both approved by roll call. The court opened and accepted a single qualified bid for a road-department backhoe from Boyd/Cat; the bid showed a $117,000 list price with a $19,500 trade-in allowance for a net $97,500. Officials noted local government appropriation (LGA) funds would cover the purchase.
The court approved two department credit-card arrangements after motions and roll calls. It authorized a United Cumberland Bank Visa card with a $500 limit for ambulance out-of-town transport fuel and a separate Visa with a $2,500 limit for the road department to purchase parts and equipment online; the finance officer had requested the changes to improve tracking and reduce personnel out-of-pocket expenses.
Personnel actions included hiring Corey Jones and Cameron Morgan as PRN EMTs at $13.50 per hour; hiring Diana King as a PRN dispatcher at $11.12 per hour; hiring Ronnie King as a full-time deputy sheriff at $15 per hour; and moving George Pinnock from part-time to full-time transport officer at $7.25 per hour. All hires were approved pending completion of required administrative steps. Emergency Medical Services Director Jimmy Barnett and the finance officer were cited as the requesters for several items.
The court approved a three-year lease renewal for a 2021 Dodge Durango used by McCreary County EMS. Staff explained leasing was more cost-effective than buying out the current lease in light of vehicle condition and potential termination costs. Part of the new lease cost was noted as being covered by grant funds.
The meeting closed with reminders about a Veterans Day ceremony set for 11 a.m. in front of the courthouse and routine departmental notes about animal control. The court adjourned following a final roll-call vote.
