Commissioners back 2.1-mile Sunflower Santa Fe Trail project with $811,857 KDOT programming request

The McPherson County Board on Oct. 28 signed a programming request to support a Kansas Department of Transportation transportation alternative (TA) award for the Sunflower Santa Fe Trail in the Canton area.
Michelle Collin of the Central Kansas Conservancy (CKC) and CKC board member and grant writer Sharon Wong presented plans for a 2.1-mile trail: a concrete surface through South First Street to Kansas Avenue in central Canton and limestone screenings on sections outside downtown. Wong said the total project award is $811,857 and that the local match responsibility is zero; the grant funds would be paid directly to contractors.
Commissioners asked about schedule and nearby bridges; Wong said the award is for the FY2026 programming cycle and she expects construction to take less than a year. The board moved, seconded and approved signing the programming request that will be submitted to KDOT.
Next steps: CKC will seek city-level coordination in Canton, present to local city council(s) as needed and work with KDOT and consultants to schedule the project under FY2026 programming.
