McPherson County awards $6.676 million contract for courthouse remodel

McPherson County commissioners voted Oct. 28 to authorize the chairman to sign a $6,676,000 contract with Fuquay to complete a county building remodel.
A Fuquay representative summarized the planning and bidding process, noting work that began with preliminary studies in 2023, involvement of Landmark Architects, and outreach to local subcontractors so McPherson County firms would have an opportunity to bid. “Our intention would be we would need one year to do the work and that the building would be unoccupied during that time,” the representative said when describing the contractor’s schedule.
Questions from commissioners covered insurance, retainage and start timing. The contractor said builders-risk insurance is an option but the premium was not included in the bid, and described a standard 10% monthly retainage that would continue until the project reached roughly 50% completion, at which point the monthly retainage would reduce and the county would hold the retainage accumulated from the first half of the project. The board discussed temporary relocation of operations and flagged public works as the likely alternate meeting/operation site during the vacancy.
Commissioner (SEG 640) moved to sign the contract; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Next steps: county staff and the contractor will finalize insurance arrangements, the retainage schedule and a formal start date; commissioners discussed a February 1 start window for some preliminary activity and noted the full one-year construction window would follow once mobilization is complete.
