Library renovation in Hopkinsville faces delays; elevators and restrooms to be ADA‑compliant

The library’s speaker said crews found bedrock at the elevator shaft that caused delays and that drain and pipe issues required additional work. Staff have packed collections and moved furniture and equipment into storage; public services have been reduced to the first floor, where passport and genealogy services remain available. "We did have a couple of delays. There was some bedrock found in our where we're putting our elevator shaft," the speaker said.
The lower‑floor restrooms are expected to be completed soon; after demolition on the second floor, the project will provide stalls, baby‑changing stations and ADA‑compliant fixtures with strobe‑friendly features. The speaker said the replacement elevator will be larger to accommodate strollers and wheelchairs and is scheduled to be completed in March 2025.
Library operations will continue in reduced form during construction; the library trustee volunteers from the Christian County Jail helped prepare and palletize books for storage, and staff who normally worked on the second floor will operate from the first floor until renovations finish.
The court did not take a formal vote on the renovation during the meeting; the update was provided as part of commission/board reports.
