Midland Public Schools board adopts emergency operations and cardiac response plans

The Midland Public Schools Board of Education on Jan. 16 approved the district’s Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) and received an update on cardiac emergency response plans required by Michigan law.
Associate superintendent Jeff presented the EOP background, saying the state’s Public Act 436 of 2018 requires districts to adopt EOPs and review them periodically in coordination with a law enforcement agency. ‘‘These EOPs are reviewed annually,’’ Jeff said, adding that the district had conducted full security assessments at each school and meets monthly with Midland Police Department leadership to review vulnerabilities.
Jeff also briefed the board on cardiac emergency response plans (CERPs), noting that plans are stored with AEDs at schools, include steps for recognizing cardiac arrest and calling 911, and that AED testing is conducted annually by nurses and health professionals. He said CPR certification is required for coaches, PE teachers and administrators, and is offered as professional development to other staff.
Board members thanked district staff and the Midland Police Department for the security work. The EOP motion passed by voice vote.
The board accepted the informational CERP update and will continue security reviews and coordination with law enforcement as part of plan maintenance and implementation.
