The Harrison County Commission approved three special funding requests on Oct. 23 to support local events.
A representative for the town of Nutter Port requested $1,500 for a Halloween festival on Oct. 26; the commission approved the request by voice vote.
Jim Tallarico, representing VFW Post 573, described plans for the Nov. 11 Veterans Day program in Clarksburg and asked the commission for $2,500 to support the parade and associated events. Tallarico said, "We put on a Veterans Day program every year," and the commission approved the $2,500 request by voice vote.
Larry Ryan, a board member of the Fort New Salem Foundation, outlined Fort New Salem’s 50th anniversary Spirit of Christmas and said the foundation contracted shuttle service for visitors because on-site parking is limited; he told commissioners the foundation was asking for $5,000 toward a total shuttle cost of $5,600. The commission approved $5,000 by voice vote.
All three requests were taken individually and approved without recorded opposition. The meeting record shows event dates (Halloween Oct. 26; Veterans Day Nov. 11; Fort New Salem events Nov. 30–Dec. 8) and that the Fort New Salem Foundation will use the funds to contract shuttle buses and provide public recognition for the county in event materials.
