Board advances multiple policy revisions in first reading

The Ambridge Area School District presented a package of first readings to update policies on discrimination/Title IX, suspension/expulsion, school calendar, emergency preparedness, relations with law enforcement, school security personnel, child abuse reporting, suicide prevention, and public comment/attendance to align with current school code and legal citations.
At the meeting, members of the hearings and rules committee presented a bundle of first readings to revise multiple district policies to align language and legal citations with current school-code provisions.
Ms. Kehoe said the proposals include revisions to policy 103 (discrimination/Title IX affecting students) and policy 104 (discrimination/Title IX affecting staff) to update definitions of protected categories such as religious creed and race. Policy 233 (suspension and expulsion) was presented for first reading to revise the compulsory school-age provisions regarding attendance and school work after expulsion.
Several safety- and operations-related policies were also read for first consideration: policy 803 (school calendar) to address alteration of the calendar in emergencies; policy 805 (emergency preparedness and response) and policy 805.1 (relations with law enforcement) to update terminology and legal citations; and policy 805.2 (school security personnel) to clarify training requirements for the school safety and security coordinator. Policy 806 (child abuse reporting) and policy 819 (suicide awareness, prevention and response) were presented to update reporting language and clarify threat-assessment and crisis response coordination.
Ms. Kehoe also proposed renaming policy 903 from "Public Participation in School Board Meetings" to "Public Comment in School Board Meetings" to emphasize Sunshine Law purposes, and presented policy 904 (public attendance at school events) for first reading to update reporting-to-law-enforcement language.
Committee members said these items were first readings; no final votes were taken. A board member asked whether comparative documents (old versus proposed language) had been distributed; administration said a draft with tracked changes had been sent and that the old policies could be provided for comparison if requested.
These first readings start the formal process for policy revision; the administration said it will provide comparative drafts and legal citations for board review ahead of subsequent meetings where votes could be scheduled.
