Animal services staff updated the Newman City Council on shelter activity and upcoming programs during the Aug. 20 meeting.
The staff member providing the report said July cat intake totaled five and August intake was three; she said the department will start a trapped-cat program Sept. 10 with drop-off hours from 11 a.m. to noon and that the program will run through Nov. 13 to increase spay/neuter access. “Until September 10 or it is national clear the shelters, which means we're just trying to get dogs adopted any way possible. So we're having $20 adoptions for dogs and $10 adoptions for cats,” the animal-services staff member said and added the fee promotions are supplemented by a Petco grant.
Shelter figures reported for dogs in July included 24 intakes with 4 adopted, 4 rescued, 11 returned to owner and 1 euthanized for public-safety reasons; August figures included 11 dog intakes with 7 adopted, 2 fostered, 5 returned to owner and 1 euthanized due to illness or injury. The presenter said staff responded to 37 animal calls in July and 47 animal calls in August.
Staff announced a low-cost animal clinic set for Sept. 21 at the LJ Memorial Building offering vaccines, microchips, licenses, deworming, flea medicine and a spay/neuter voucher for City of Newman residents. The presenter invited questions; no council action on shelter operations was recorded in the transcript.
The council thanked staff for the report and reiterated public-safety and animal-welfare reminders ahead of the fall festival.
