Bakersfield proclaims October Paint the Town Pink month; Links for Life highlights free screenings

Mayor Karen K. Goh presented a proclamation recognizing October as Paint the Town Pink month in Bakersfield and honored Links for Life for more than 30 years of service.
Jennifer Henry, executive director of Links for Life, outlined the organization’s local programs: the group provided 143 mammograms last year, diagnosed two women who otherwise lacked access to screening, supports support groups and nutrition programs for survivors, and operates a mobile mammography unit that staff said costs about $6,500 per visit and can screen roughly 30 uninsured women. Henry and pageant titleholders invited the public to events including an October screening and a community “Lacing it Up” event at the Park at Riverwalk.
The proclamation highlighted local impact numbers staff cited in introducing the item—staff noted that roughly 400 Kern County community members are diagnosed with breast cancer annually and that approximately 100 people from the county may die each year from the disease. Links for Life requested support for more frequent mobile mammography visits to reach uninsured residents.
The council thanked Links for Life for its service and encouraged residents to participate in Pink Month events. The proclamation was presented without objection and no council action beyond the recognition was taken.
