Alamance County commissioners unanimously adopted a proclamation recognizing October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month and praised the county—s coordinated services for victims.
Sky Sullivan, director of the Family Justice Center, read the proclamation, described the Family Justice Center—s multi-agency partners — including Family Abuse Services, the Women—s Resource Center and local law enforcement — and announced a vigil on Oct. 29 at the J.B. Allen Courthouse to honor victims who have died as a result of domestic violence. Sullivan said the Family Justice Center and partners have served more than 1,000 victims over 3,000 contacts so far in 2024 and noted statewide homicide and suicide figures in 2024 that have already surpassed 2022 and 2023 totals.
"If you see folks with purple ribbons or purple on, that—s to signify Domestic Violence Awareness Month," Sullivan said, urging community support and attendance at the vigil. Commissioners thanked Sullivan and partner organizations and recorded a unanimous voice vote adopting the proclamation.
The Family Justice Center asked the public to watch for posted flyers and said partner organizations will participate in education and victim-support activities throughout the month.
