The Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors authorized staff to pursue an investigation and obtain contractor bids after discussing water damage reported from Dec. 5 at a county facility.
Staff described an adjuster’s estimate in the neighborhood of $27,000 and explained the likely scope: removal of an exterior condenser/cooler, affected drywall, insulation and tile flooring in office, kitchen and cafeteria areas, plus associated electrical and plumbing work. Board members raised questions about asbestos testing, proper handling of Freon, electrical disconnects that serve a mini-split unit, and whether removal and disposal or salvage should be pursued.
Several supervisors suggested that, because the situation could involve mold and hazardous-material concerns, asbestos testing should occur before invasive work and that bids should distinguish clearly between removal, disposal and potential salvage so the county maintains control of any equipment value. Members discussed whether to declare an emergency to expedite immediate work or to solicit bids and allow 10 days for submissions; one supervisor recommended putting a two-week window to obtain bids while another urged caution to ensure contractors know the exact scope.
A board member moved to authorize a probe/investigation into the water incident; the motion was seconded and the chair called the vote. The board recorded 'Aye' and approved further investigation and coordination with the insurer and contractors.
Staff said insurance would likely cover removal and that the county would ask contractors to specify which tasks they would perform and whether the insurance company would reimburse specific removal costs. The board requested a follow-up report with contractor estimates and summary recommendations at the next meeting.
