Local service groups ask Chickasaw County for funding as budget work continues

Several community organizations told the Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors on Dec. 16 that they need county support as the FY26 budget is finalized.
Sam Blatt, director of Development and Public Relations for a regional review center, requested $5,000 to continue confidential victim-support services in Chickasaw County. "We would continue to appreciate the, continued support, to fund our request for $5,000, for our services, in Chickasaw County," Blatt said, describing SART coordination with law enforcement and an office that covers Chickasaw from Decorah.
During public comment, a Council on Aging representative described an urgent need to repair a 22-year-old roof and a failing heating system at a community center, detailed fundraising efforts and asked the board for help to cover an operating shortfall. "If you can help us with the 7,000 to get us through this year," the representative said; the speaker indicated they would submit a formal letter to county staff.
Diane Murphy, co-chair of the Pioneer Cemetery group, presented a proposed cemetery budget of $6,009.55 and said the group would request $6,200 for the coming year to continue monument repairs and volunteer work. Murphy described extensive volunteer efforts and asked the board to maintain the cemetery’s usual county support.
County staff also summarized other budget requests that the transcript records as a Watershed/Upper Wapsi contribution request of $1,800 (described in the meeting as a per-capita/voluntary contribution) and a Services for Youth and Families request of $5,000. Supervisors asked clarifying questions about precedent, city contributions and whether the requests should be handled by autonomous boards; staff said formal allocations will be decided during the January budget meeting.
Board members generally asked that organizations deliver formal letters to the county (staff contact: Sheila Shackleton) so requests can be included in the budget packet. The board deferred final decisions until the January meeting after supervisors complete procedural review and the new member is sworn in.
