Chickasaw County auditor clarifies absentee ballot rules; supervisors order advertisement of vacancies

Chickasaw County's auditor reiterated state guidance on absentee ballot request forms and the board voted to advertise open board and commission seats during its Sept. 16 meeting.
An auditor's office representative told the board that per the Secretary of State's email the county can only send an absentee ballot request form when the voter themselves asks for it. "When they call in, that's just one motor — one absentee request form," the auditor said, noting extra blank forms are available in the hallway and on the Secretary of State's website.
Unidentified Speaker 2 asked whether it would be unethical for a candidate to call and request a form on someone else's behalf; the auditor responded that the office cannot fulfill such requests without the voter initiating the call. That exchange clarified the county's practice and limits on staff discretion.
Separately, the board approved a motion directing the county auditor to advertise open board and commission seats in the county newspapers and on county channels, with applications suggested to be returned by Dec. 13. The motion passed by voice vote.
The board also reviewed upcoming expirations for several positions, including civil service commission seats and local board of health terms, and asked staff to update appointment policy language and committee lists to reflect recent state law changes.
