Chickasaw County sets Aug. 26 hearing on budget amendment; officials say taxes will not increase

The Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 13 voted to set a public hearing for Aug. 26 on Budget Amendment No. 1, which county staff described as adding roughly $270,000 in new items including opioid settlement proceeds and a building permanent-improvement allocation.
A county staff member who presented the amendment said the packet included an updated spreadsheet and a notice of public hearing. "I added the opioid settlement. You said a hundred and 20,000 when I budgeted. I already had 50 budgeted, so I increased it 70," the staff member said, describing how the settlement money and other line changes were added. The presenter added $200,000 for a building permanent improvement and summarized the additions as about $270,000.
The presenter also explained other line-item changes, including a $7,240 grant that was recorded May 1 and remains in the prior fiscal-year ending fund balance; that grant must be spent in the current year to be retained, the presenter said. The presenter identified an R&D services expense of $15,000, ongoing EMS expenditures charged to the EMS fund, and a $200,000 capital-projects allocation. The presenter also detailed items added for county economic development, sales-tax infrastructure projects for roads, increased contract auditing services and an allocation for Pioneer Cemetery.
Regarding the amendment's fiscal effect, the presenter told supervisors, "And this does not increase any taxes." A supervisor moved to set the public hearing for Aug. 26, 2024, at 9:10 a.m. on the courthouse seventh floor and to publish notice in the official papers on Aug. 15 and 16; the motion was seconded.
By roll call the motion carried with votes recorded as Jake — Aye; Steve — Aye; Travis — Aye. The board then thanked staff and the newspapers for assistance in preparing notices and adjourned.
The board will hold the public hearing on Budget Amendment No. 1 at 9:10 a.m. on Aug. 26 in the boardroom on the seventh floor of the courthouse in New Hampton; public notice is scheduled for publication Aug. 15 and 16.
