County engineer says HSIP traffic sign work complete; bridges and road surface campaigns set for fall

Chickasaw County’s engineering and secondary roads staff told the Board of Supervisors Sept. 9 that the HSIP traffic sign project is complete and ready for closeout, and provided a status update on multiple bridge and road maintenance projects slated for late September and early October.
Engineer Roman Lensing presented the final voucher for the HSIP (highway safety improvement program) traffic sign project and requested signatures to close out the grant. Lensing told supervisors the solar‑powered flashing LED signs and associated work are complete and that the county needs only the signature line to finalize the project closeout paperwork.
Secondary Roads (Speaker 4) reported progress on Bridge 2870 — including pile cap and sheet piling work — and said crews will set beams and pour concrete in the coming weeks. Staff described ongoing crack filling and slurry planning for spring 2025, equipment deliveries (two new Bobcats), and a plan to complete round‑3 hard surface work in the northeast quadrant. Crew scheduling and dry conditions were cited as factors affecting the pace of surface and blading operations.
Material procurement was discussed: the county received 1,200 tons of ice control sand at a quoted $12.039/ton (total $14,446.80), with an alternate bid from BMC of $12.90/ton ($15,480). Board members noted the DOT submittal deadline on Sept. 15 for annual reports and asked staff to return with any outstanding closeout documentation.
The board voted to approve the final voucher and move forward with closeout signatures to complete the HSIP grant requirements.
