Dharma Mirza, introduced as president of the Mid Willamette Trans Support Network, read the proclamation noting Pride’s origins in historic actions such as the Compton Cafeteria riots and Stonewall and recounting regional history of organizing and violence against LGBTQI+ people. The proclamation listed community groups that support local 2SLGBTQI+ people and encouraged county residents to celebrate and support gender-affirming care and inclusion across the county.
Commissioner Nancy Wise moved to adopt the proclamation (referenced in the packet as P2020-414); a second was recorded and the board voiced unanimous assent. After the vote, Rose Brecker, founder of the Philomath Pride Collective, invited commissioners and the public to Philomath Pride on Saturday, June 15 at Philomath City Park, with family-friendly activities and community resources supported in part by Benton County Health.
The proclamation text, as read by Mirza, included a recap of legal and social milestones and local organizing groups and concluded with the formal statement that June is proclaimed 2SLGBTQI+ Pride Month in Benton County.
