County refines resource-naming policy to add procedural clarity and public input steps

BENTON COUNTY — The Board of Commissioners on Oct. 15 approved revisions to Policy A109 governing the naming of county facilities and land.
Sean Maguire presented the updated policy and emphasized that the policy text was intentionally left broader while procedures were made specific to allow faster operational handling. The revised procedures describe a two-step board direction to the administrator, appointment of a facilitator (typically from the BOC office) to shepherd the process, public-engagement options (online surveys, listening sessions) and the requirement that the facilitator present three to five recommended names for the board to consider.
Commissioners said they appreciated the clearer division between policy and procedure, the attention to cultural and historical considerations and the procedural steps intended to prevent protracted committee timelines. A motion to approve the revised policy was moved and seconded and the board voted to adopt the changes.
The board and staff discussed possible next steps for triggering the policy for upcoming facility namings and emphasized public input and respect for indigenous cultural considerations.
