Benton County proclaims October 2024 'Great Oregon ShakeOut Month' and urges earthquake preparedness

BENTON COUNTY, Ore. — The Benton County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 15 formally proclaimed October 2024 as 'Great Oregon ShakeOut Month' and encouraged residents, businesses and visitors to prepare for earthquake hazards associated with the Cascadia Subduction Zone.
Chelsea Chitka of Benton County Emergency Management told the board the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and FEMA have identified the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake as a major national-level threat and described local outreach and exercises designed to increase preparedness. “When individuals take responsibility for preparing their families and their communities, the chance of survival and return to normalcy following a disaster is greatly increased,” Chitka said.
The proclamation encourages community participation in preparedness activities and the county’s public-education campaigns and notes county staff will participate in national-level exercises. The board moved to adopt the proclamation, seconded and voted in favor.
The proclamation also calls on community members to practice the drop, cover and hold drill on Oct. 17 at 10:17 a.m.
