Board approves course catalogs; technology integrationist highlights coding week

YANKTON, S.D. — On Jan. 13 the Yankton School District 63-3 board approved updated course catalogs and heard a technology spotlight on Computer Science Education Week.
Tiffany Bessie, the districts technology integrationist, told the board that she has been working in classrooms and highlighted activities during Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 9–13) in which fourth- and fifth-graders used block-based coding sites such as code.org and similar platforms to learn problem-solving and coding concepts. "The big thing that I want to focus on today is, computer science education week," Bessie said, describing students engagement and how coding exercises build persistence and troubleshooting skills.
Separately, staff presented the district course catalog, noting few changes beyond dates and alignment with SAIT course numbers. The board moved to approve the catalog and voted in favor by roll call. Administrators said registration for the 2025–26 school year will open in the coming weeks and counselors, department heads and teachers will support the process.
What happens next: course registration activities proceed through February and building-level registration events for junior kindergarten and kindergarten are planned during February registration windows.
