Board approves several policy revisions and repeals, opens others to 30-day public comment

On Aug. 13 the Guilford County Board of Education voted to adopt multiple policy updates recommended by the policy committee and to repeal older, superseded policies.
Board member Diane Bellamy Smalls summarized the committee's recommendation to place certain policy revisions on a 30-day public comment period (Aug. through Sept. 12) with return for board discussion in October. Notable actions recorded in the meeting included adoption of a procurement ethics policy modeled on the North Carolina School Boards Association guidance, consolidation of grants and special-projects guidance into a revised policy replacing older policies, and revisions to fiscal-management standards to reflect government accounting practices and internal controls. Several older policies (including policy 8220, 9002 and cash-management policy 8410) were recommended for repeal.
Votes on the individual items were taken and recorded as passing unanimously where recorded. The policy committee emphasized that nondiscrimination policy language was being updated to reflect federal Title IX rules as they apply under North Carolina law.
