The Guilford County Board of Education voted unanimously Aug. 13 to extend Superintendent Whitney Oakley's contract through June 30, 2028, and to add a 10% retention bonus to her compensation along with a $10,000 contribution to a retirement account of her choosing.
Board member Diane Bellamy Smalls made the motion to approve the extension and additional compensation "because we wanna keep you if possible," and the motion carried on a recorded voice vote with all members voting yes. After the vote, Superintendent Whitney Oakley said she was "grateful to serve in this community" and looked forward to the work ahead.
Oakley used her remarks to note recent district activity, including school visits and the ribbon cutting for the new Claxton Elementary building. She also announced GCS Flex, a program for high-school-aged homeschool students offering rigorous courses, career certifications, extracurricular activities, mental-health services and access to community college classes (more information at gcsnc.com/gcsflex).
The board took the extension after a separate evaluation earlier the same day during which each member completed an individual evaluation and then met as an entity. Chair Dina Hayes said the board "uniformly found that Doctor Oakley has met every standard of leadership for superintendents established in the state of North Carolina in her second full year."
