At the Dec. 2 reorganization meeting, a board member raised concerns about materials available to minors in district schools and asked the board to put a motion on the January agenda to discuss removing books he described as graphic or hypersexualized.
“I had a deep concern regarding the inappropriate materials available to the minors in our local school system,” the board member said, arguing that the board has a responsibility to reflect ‘‘the moral compass set by the majority of the parents and citizens in our community’’ and to ensure materials align with local values.
The member requested that the board place his prepared motion on the January agenda for discussion and a potential vote. Chair Terry Frank said the board would include the topic on the January agenda and address it then.
The discussion was procedural at this meeting: the board did not vote on removing materials, instead agreeing to put the matter on a future agenda so members can review legal and policy implications and consider options.
