The McDowell County Board of Education unanimously approved a certified and salaried-staff local leave program Monday to recognize employees who worked additional hours during the district’s disaster recovery.
The proposal, presented by the district finance officer (packet referenced as 'Miss Grama'), would grant local leave days to eligible staff that they could take on non-student days so instruction is not disrupted. The program would be similar to leave granted during the COVID period, the presenter said, and the leave would have no cash value, would not carry over to subsequent years and would require supervisor approval.
Board member Mister Frank moved to accept the request and Mister Shuford seconded. Chairman Terry English called for a vote and the motion carried unanimously.
The finance officer told the board the leave "would just be in lieu of other leave, that would save their leave for when they went to retire" and that the measure would not create an extra monetary expense for the district.
The board thanked administrative staff for their recovery work; no amendments were made to the proposed terms at the meeting.
