McDowell County Schools swear in five new board members; Terry Frank elected chair

Terry Frank was elected chair of the McDowell County Schools Board of Education and Chuck Abernathy was selected vice chair during the board’s Dec. 2 reorganization meeting following the swearing-in of five new members.
Judge Ellen Shelley of District 41 administered the oaths to newly elected board members Jimmy Allison, Paul Baker, Greg Barksdale, Derek McGinnis and Donnie Settles before the meeting was called to order. After signatures were collected, the board opened nominations for leadership positions.
“Mr. Frank, if you will, you can assume the chair role,” a board official said after a unanimous show-of-hands vote in favor of Terry Frank. Frank said he felt “very honored” to accept the position and pledged transparent, inclusive leadership. Chuck Abernathy was nominated and affirmed as vice chair without further contest.
The board also affirmed Dr. Grit as secretary to the board and Becky Smith as administrative assistant; members were asked to sign code-of-ethics forms required by state statute and return them for the record.
The meeting included ceremonial remarks, a presentation of colors by the McDowell High School NJROTC and brief individual remarks from new and returning members. The board then proceeded with regular agenda business.
