Board hears facilities progress: HVAC upgrades, new cafeteria and network work; Eastfield cooling tower flagged for replacement

Facilities and operations staff provided a report on summer work across the district, highlighting HVAC, cafeteria, technology and upcoming needs.
The district completed a major HVAC project at McDowell High School, adding air conditioning to the gym and all Career and Technical Education (CTE) labs, officials said. Maintenance staff also showed photos of new cafeteria and kitchen work; officials called the new serving equipment and commons renovation a major county-wide improvement.
Operations staff described upgrades to the district network over the summer and said a satellite dish was installed to support technology needs at Summit Academy. Facilities staff said one rooftop unit at West Middle School remains to be replaced and that Eastfield’s cooling tower is operating at about 50% capacity and will likely need replacement within the next one to two years. "That cooling tower is gonna have to be replaced in the next 1 to 2 years... It's operating at about 50%." A vendor has told the district to expect new lockers by Sept. 30, the presentation added.
Board members discussed packaging sound-system upgrades and pursuing donations for some projects; the Buildings and Grounds Committee directed the superintendent to gather quotes for three priority projects (a softball locker room and concessions, a new gym floor at East Middle School, and parking improvements at East McDowell Middle). A donor also pledged turf for a play area and track covering, expected to be delivered this week.
