Summit Academy opens; board hears early enrollment and a graduation milestone

District leaders and teachers told the McDowell County Board the Summit Academy opened Aug. 26 and has grown from an initial 15 students to 26 enrolled; staff expect 21 to graduate this school year and one student has already completed graduation requirements.
Board members heard an update on Summit Academy, an alternative placement for students that opened this school year.
Teacher representative Joy Hill and Principal Miss Petit introduced the Summit staff and described early outcomes. "On August 26, Summit Academy opened its doors and welcomed in 15 new trailblazers," the presenter said. The board heard the program now has 26 students enrolled; "21 of those students will graduate this school year. And we've already had 1 student to finish and complete her requirements for graduation," the presenter added.
Presenters named staff working at Summit Academy, including Ava Wittman (school social worker), Jack Jensen (teacher), Lee Kupfaul, Sherry Duckworth, Stephanie Epler, Miss Byrd and Stephanie Borak, and described efforts by maintenance and technology teams to prepare the building. Board members and teachers praised early relationships between staff and students and noted the Academy’s work to help students meet graduation requirements.
The Academy was described as an "alternative placement" for students who do not thrive in traditional settings; board members thanked staff and volunteers who helped ready the space. The board did not vote on Summit operations at the meeting.
