Pleasant Valley highlights registered apprenticeships and para-to-teacher pathway

Bernadette Roskarin, director of secondary education, read a proclamation recognizing National Apprenticeship Week/Month and urged the community to promote registered apprenticeship pathways that connect students to industry training and careers.
Roskarin described the district’s participation with partner districts and a grant-backed model that lets paraeducators pursue credentials while being paid as student teachers; she said participation has supported up to about 15 participants at a time. She named recent student teachers who completed the program: Taylor Fox, Erin Ackerman and Allison Schwedt.
Mary Johnson spoke about employer partnerships and student outcomes, naming Arconic as a placement partner and noting that some students earn both apprenticeship certificates and Scott Community College credentials. Johnson said one student in an employer placement was earning $37 an hour with benefits.
Board members asked how the district promotes apprenticeship and internship opportunities to students beyond CTE classes; administrators said they are meeting with CTE teachers to expand outreach and integrate pre-apprenticeship and internship information into course promotion.
The board also discussed shifting some auto apprenticeship approaches to semester-long internships and adding new pre-apprenticeship tracks (diesel, accounting tech, IT tech) to better align with industry needs and student transitions to college or employment.
The proclamation and updates were informational; board members expressed support for continued work to expand apprenticeships, internships and related CTE pathways.
