McDowell County Board honors Assistant Superintendent Colonel Brian Oliver ahead of October retirement

At a regular meeting of the McDowell County Board of Education, the board paid tribute to Assistant Superintendent Colonel Brian Oliver as he prepares to retire in October.
Superintendent Dr. Grit announced a retirement reception at the Carson House and invited Oliver to address the board. "Tonight marks a special night when Colonel Oliver bids us farewell," Dr. Grit said, noting Oliver's 11 years serving the district and his broader service in multiple counties.
Colonel Oliver, who also serves as a U.S. Marine Corps officer, spoke to the board about his combined military and education career. "I've been so blessed. As a Marine Corps officer, I was allowed to serve 31 years and 8 months in the Marine Corps," he said, describing three mobilizations since 2001 and a long history as a principal and educator in several North Carolina counties. He thanked board members, staff and his family for their support.
Board members praised Oliver's leadership and steadiness. Chairman English called him "the steady in everything," and members said replacing his experience will be challenging. Dr. Grit said invitations for a retirement reception at the Carson House were forthcoming.
The board did not take any personnel action at the meeting related to Oliver's replacement; the item served as formal recognition and a public farewell ahead of his retirement month.
