Grounds maintenance reports tree plantings, irrigation fixes and long lead times for playground parts

Grounds maintenance staff presented an annual report on Dec. 12 detailing this year’s accomplishments and near-term work. The report said crews planted ornamental flats and 20 trees in the current cycle, replaced 10 drinking fountains, repaired irrigation mains and heads, installed a French drain at a picnic area to address flooding, and renovated golf-course bunkers and ball-washers.
Staff described a mulching program, ongoing turf reseeding and the start of diamond renovations. The grounds lead warned that some playground parts have 4–8 week lead times once ordered and that safety-rule changes at the state level can render parts obsolete, slowing repairs.
In public comment, a resident urged using a 200-tree grant to add shade trees at Triangle Park. Grounds staff said they will avoid planting Chinese elm because of a borering pest that can cause branch collapse, and explained that French drains were installed to route standing water into subsurface gravel so it percolates rather than pooling at the surface.
The commission voted to file the grounds annual report. Staff said planned follow-up includes continuing diamond renovations, additional tree plantings as available and contractor scheduling for Hollydale Regional Park’s remaining tree trimming.
