At Tuesday’s meeting the Gardena City Council unanimously approved and swore in a newly appointed member to the Youth Commission following a motion by Councilmember Francis and a second by Mayor Pro Tem Tanaka.
Separately, staff introduced ordinance 18‑76, which would amend Gardena Municipal Code sections 2.48.0.02a and 2.48.0.055 to reduce the Youth Commission’s membership from 10 to 7 and cut the number of non‑council appointees from five to two. City staff said the change is intended to make it easier for the commission to achieve quorum and continue its work.
Councilmember Henderson commended the youth commission for identifying the challenge and following the process to bring forward the amendment. The ordinance was introduced by motion and will return to the council for further consideration at the next scheduled meeting.
