Residents urge help with safety, library programs and food pantry at Gardena council meeting

Artist Russell Bryant said his studio has suffered thefts and an attempted break‑in; he installed a gate to secure the property but said planning staff subsequently told him the gate did not comply with city rules and that he faces fines. Bryant asked for guidance or a variance to allow higher, more secure gates.
Andrea Simental, community library manager at the Gardena Mamie Deer Library, announced fall programming for children, teens and adults, including a children's book party, teen trivia events and meditation workshops with dates and ages for participants.
Paul Randall reported statistics from Mama Rosa Food Pantry: on Oct. 5 the pantry served 191 walk‑up clients (685 households total), distributed 15,787 pounds of food that day and since reopening Aug. 3 has served 2,923 clients and distributed 78,000 pounds of product; Randall estimated that 46–51% of clients are Gardena residents.
Mayor Serta noted council cannot respond during oral communications but said the items would be taken under consideration.
