Junction City approves evidence room remodel and lockers, citing current off‑site storage

The Junction City Council voted June 25 to award a contract to JP Custom Contracting to build and secure an in‑house evidence room and to procure lockable evidence lockers, approving a contract not to exceed $33,292 (including a 25% project contingency) and authorizing Chief Waddell to sign the legally sufficient contract.
Chief Waddell told the council the department’s evidence is currently stored outside in a trailer and that staff had identified an interior space that can be modified with secure walls and ventilation. He said the department is handling a large property inventory: “We have, I think we have 4,400 pieces of property in our evidence room,” Waddell said in explaining the need for secure, lockable storage and a dedicated evidence technician to preserve chain of custody.
Waddell described optional lockable lockers with an estimated additional cost of between $5,000 and $10,000 and outlined a plan for officers to deposit property in lockers that only an evidence technician can access. Councilor Hancock moved to award the project to JP Custom Contracting; Councilor Worschmer seconded and the council voted unanimously to approve the contract and authorize the chief to sign.
The city said the awarded amount includes a contractor contingency; staff will work with the contractor and report back as the project proceeds.
