The Junction City Council approved a public works project June 11 to install an automated irrigation valve and monitoring equipment at the wastewater treatment plant to meet regulatory requirements.
Public Works staff said DEQ requires the city to be able to automatically stop lagoon irrigation when wind speeds exceed a sustained 15 miles per hour and to shut down for certain chlorine fault conditions. Staff presented vendor quotes for parts ($24,177.92) and installation/monitoring ($23,918), for a combined total of $48,095.92, and said SDC fund monies are budgeted for this work. The Public Works Committee had recommended sending the item to council for final approval.
Councilors discussed parts availability and maintenance considerations; staff said the parts are standard and typically have a 2–3 week lead time. A motion passed to approve the project and authorize the public works director to sign the necessary documents.
Staff noted the alternative—ceasing irrigation—would create operational problems, and installing the valve now avoids future emergency retrofit costs if DEQ or the design requires it after construction.
