A resident delivering public comment asked the Geary County Commission to examine how sales-tax revenue is collected and shared with cities, saying the distribution raises questions about whether county residents are receiving their fair share.
"For 2024 sales tax, the county collected $7,700,000 from consumers," the speaker said during an extended public comment. "Statutorily, you have to give $3,000,000 to the city of Junction City." The commenter urged commissioners to ask legislators and staff to explain why the statutory distribution exists and to consider whether policy adjustments could reduce pressure on property taxes.
The speaker recommended three priorities for the coming year: reduce regulation, scrutinize taxation, and review compensation practices for administrative positions and elected officials. They told the commission that clearer public presentations about sales-tax receipts and distributions — including how much the county retains versus what is shared with cities — would help residents understand local fiscal policy.
Commissioners acknowledged the point and said the issue is discussed at the Kansas Association of Counties and during legislative meetings; they asked staff to prepare clearer materials for public meetings. No formal action or vote resulted from the comment period.
