Board hears construction update: geothermal online, canopy delays and a $2,800 cooling‑tower credit approved

The LaVec (Labex) project is approximately two weeks behind schedule because of grading/elevation corrections and storm‑drainage adjustments that required a temporary hold on canopy fabrication, the representatives said. That delay will compress the schedule, with concrete and asphalt work to follow and a risk to finishing before school starts.
On a cost item, staff recommended accepting a proposed change‑order credit of $2,800 for not demolishing a slab in the cooling‑tower area at Bath County High School (BG‑22‑376). The board approved the credit by voice vote. Staff also presented a special‑inspection payment for LaVec Phase 2 (BG‑22‑520) of $1,858.50, which the board approved during the regular session.
Staff cautioned the board that using ESSER funds on some pieces of the project triggers Davis‑Bacon prevailing‑wage requirements, which can raise labor costs; they advised that pricing phase 2 of the pond now could be cheaper than waiting until after the LAVEC project closes in the fall.
The board directed staff to return with finalized costs and timeline options for phase 2 and other remaining construction work as the design team completes plans.
