Student representatives sworn in; principals report honor roll, events and enrollment gains

The board welcomed three newly sworn student representatives — Rachel Lehi, Javier Quintana and Aubrey Emery — who each repeated the student-representative oath and committed to supporting district policies and laws.
Principals from district schools gave short updates: Shawna Schlepp (Annie Schlepp) and Kent Buller (Orchard Hill) thanked staff for work on behavior support and PBIS calibrations; James Joy reported that 258 Phoenix High students earned a GPA of at least 3.5 for the first quarter, including 10 students with a 4.0.
Student leaders highlighted extracurriculars: cross-country placed seventh in 4A state competition, the cheer team is entering its first competition season with the first event on Jan. 12, and the DECA chapter is growing with new written projects working with local businesses. Food-service staff noted work to reduce packaging in to-go meals and plan to request additional funds to fully use an existing farm-to-school grant.
The board heard brief safety updates: students praised clearer signage and improved drills, noting that changes had made them feel better informed about emergency procedures. The superintendent and staff thanked partners who attended a recent interagency meeting focused on student safety.
