Impasse hearing between Palm Beach County schools and union recessed; parties to reconvene by Monday COB

An impasse hearing involving the Palm Beach County School District and the teachers' union recessed after both sides agreed to continue negotiations and report back by close of business Monday, a district representative said.

The district representative asked for a brief recess and proposed continuing talks to "reach a settlement" within a short window so the parties could find an outcome "that is sustainable for the district and more importantly for our employees," the representative said. The district emphasized efforts to make employment with Palm Beach County School District competitive and to ensure employees feel valued.

Mark Richard, speaking for the union, thanked the presiding official for urging continued talks and described the pressures on members. "Our members struggle every day to make ends meet ... these heroes in the classrooms and they need also to have relief," he said, urging negotiators to use the agreed interval to find a fair resolution that addresses health-insurance cost concerns.

The presiding official asked whether the 48-hour suggestion should be recorded in an order or treated as aspirational. Parties agreed that "close of business on Monday" would be a clearer deadline than a strict 48-hour window that would fall on a weekend. The official recessed the hearing and confirmed the parties will report back by that deadline.
