Students and schools recognized: AVID student shares story; Park Elementary earns PBIS recognition
Summary
An AVID student from Lake Placid High School told the board how AVID unlocked her passion for writing; Park Elementary received a PBIS bronze-level recognition and two schools got plaques for industry certifications through iCEV.
John Verity, the district AVID director, introduced Giselle Carpenter, an AVID student who told the board how the AVID curriculum helped her discover and pursue writing as a career passion.
"By following the AVID curriculum, Mrs. Erwin was able to help me realize something about myself, my goals, and my passion," Carpenter said, describing how classroom projects led her to research and report on issues such as overtourism in Hawaii and ultimately to a desire to be a reporter.
The board also presented a Bronze-level Florida Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) recognition to Park Elementary for its documented fidelity of implementation and more than 21 years as a PBIS campus. The district presented plaques from iCEV to Avon Park High School and Hill Gustat Middle School for student industry certification achievements; teachers with high pass rates were commended.
Lake Country Elementary staff introduced technology specialist Sean (Shawn), who announced plans to enlist in the U.S. Air Force and will be deployed in December; the board and her colleagues offered congratulations.
