Palm Desert swears in new council members, appoints Harnick mayor and Truby mayor pro tem

Council voted unanimously to accept the election results and to swear in Joe Perdeto and Gina Nastandi. The city clerk administered the constitutional oath of office to both members. Afterward, Perdeto spoke briefly of economic and public-safety priorities, saying, "Let's begin. Let's get to work." The oath included pledges to defend both the U.S. Constitution and the Constitution of the State of California.
Later in the meeting council considered leadership appointments for one-year terms. A motion to appoint Harnick as mayor and Truby as mayor pro tem passed 4 to 0 on a voice vote. The presiding officer noted Mayor Quintanilla was absent due to illness.
The actions formalize the council's organization for the coming year and clear the way for the body to continue work on housing, transportation and public-safety initiatives discussed later in the meeting.
