County employees raise $6,705.50 for Helping Hands Humane Society; shelter says it took in nearly 6,000 animals this year

Amanda Monhall, Shawnee County public information officer, presented a donation from employee fundraisers totaling $6,705.50 to Helping Hands Humane Society during the commission’s Dec. 5 meeting.
Grace Clinton, director of philanthropy at Helping Hands, thanked the county and its employees and said the shelter had taken in nearly 6,000 animals this year, "about 4,000 of which were strays found within the city of Topeka and 1,000 are strays found within the perimeter of Shawnee County." She described the county employees’ fundraising and a bingo night as important community support; staff noted a dog brought to bingo was adopted that night.
Chair Kevin Cook and other commissioners thanked the volunteers and staff who organized the fundraisers and posed for a photo with shelter representatives. The presentation was not tied to any formal county action other than recognition of the donation.
The donation will be used at the discretion of Helping Hands Humane Society to support shelter operations, according to the presentation.
