Roads, equipment and broadband: Linn County public works reports progress on 1350 and 900 Road projects, fiber phases and equipment status

Public works staff briefed the Linn County Commission on Dec. 9 about a range of infrastructure projects and equipment condition.
Road & Bridge reported work on 1,275 gravel roads with 933 of them addressed (about 77% completion), ongoing ditching and culvert replacements on Faucet Road and substantial progress on the 1350 Road project where crews were placing culverts and raising the roadbed. Staff said a vibratory roller and blade were being used on site and that cleanup and debris hauling remained.
On the 900 Road project, public works and engineers have been discussing scope and damages; an upcoming large pre-planning meeting with KDOT, railroad personnel and contractors was scheduled to address construction coordination. Commissioners were told prior projected costs for parts of the project were in the $30,000—50,000 ballpark, and a meeting with engineers the following week would review options.
The department reported equipment issues including a compactor box that required extensive repainting and reconstruction and a D6 dozer with a worn equalizer bar. Repair estimates for the dozer ranged in discussion up to $37,682.99 in worst-case scenarios; commissioners approved a repair authorization capped at $23,682.99 to Foley to return the machine to service.
Staff also updated the commission on broadband work by contractor Lantel: phase 1 complete, phase 2 and 3 nearing completion with splicing and cleanup remaining. Road & Bridge said it would run a magnet-equipped blade monthly on a stretch of 607 Road to pick up nails and debris after resident complaints about tire damage.
What happens next: Road & Bridge will finalize the Foley repair contract within the authorized limit, proceed with culvert installations on 1350 Road, and coordinate the KDOT pre-planning meeting for the 900 Road project.
